I was very excited to be asked to be on the tour for this book. I loved this story, and t was actually dry different from what I expected.
The book is a thriller, but not your usual type of on the edge of your seat stuff, but very deep rooted personal thriller type of story. The story is split into 2 parts: Part 1 is called Brothers and is broken down into 3 pieces: William, Luke, Brian. Part 2 is called Strangers and each chapter is told from a different brothers perspective. Each part tells of life from when they were children, and each chapter flits between different stages in their lives. The brothers love each other, but hate each other, a very strange and strained relationship between all three of them. They’ve lived their childhoods all vying for their parents attention, hence causing so much sibling rivalry.
Their mother features strongly in the story, an older actress whom is very well known in their area, and loves the attention. It’s clear that she loves her children, but sometimes the call of fame seems more important to her.
William is the one who grows up, becomes very well known in the film making in duty, gets married and has a child. He also has affairs left right and centre, and makes himself known as a womaniser and a pig to be quite honest.
Luke is a strange child. Very religious and believes he must be the one to help save everyone from eternal damnation. He takes his religion very seriously, sometimes a lot more than he should have, like going to a fancy dress party as Jesus on the cross (which has some consequences). Later in life we see Luke has changed a lot, looks different, has a different job to what we’d expect, and suffers with severe mental health issues. My heart broke for him at time’s and the whole ‘baby’ storyline was quite scary and very sad.
Brian is the middle child, and goes up to do different things, but ends up in France as a teacher. Things go horribly wrong and he ends up back home working for use on his music tours. Brian was a bit of a strange character, there were times
I liked him then times I really didn’t.
The funeral mentioned in the blurb isn’t really mentioned in the book until the last part, but it keeps you guessing all the way through as to who’s funeral it will be.
If you like thrillers I’d highly recommend this one!
